Introductions:
Epimedium, also known as Rowdy Lamb Herb, Barrenwort, Bishop's Hat, Fairy Wings, Horny Goat Weed, or Yin Yang Huo (Chinese: ҹѲ), is a genus of about 60 or more species of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Berberidaceae. The large majority are endemic to southern China, with further outposts in Europe,[1] and central, southern and eastern Asia.
Epimedium species are hardy perennials. The majority have four-petaled "spider-like" flowers in spring. Many are believed to be aphrodisiacs, particularly horny goat weed.[2].
In Asia, leaves have been used on treating fatigue and boosting sex drive for a long history since the 16th century. Nowadays, the plant is a traditional Chinese medicine while it is widely used as dietary supplement in western countries.
Epimedium contains at least 15 kinds of active elements, including icariin, epinedoside A, TFE, noricarliin, icariresinol, EPS, etc. It is considered at present that the elements with most powerful pharmacological activities are Icariin, TFE and EPS.
